Fresh off another quarter of same store sales growth, Food Lion held grand re-opening activities at 169 stores in North and South Carolina beginning Wednesday, November 13 in observation of investments the company said it has now made in nearly all of its 1,100 stores.
The investments take the form of reduced prices on 6,000 items, enhanced produce quality as part of Food Lion’s “Fresh From the Field” initiative and the addition of MVP Savings Centers where participants in the retailer’s loyalty program scan their cards to receive personalized offers.
"With today's launch, nearly all Food Lion stores have received these store investments," said Greg Finchum, SVP of retail operation at Food Lion. "We invite customers to visit their local Food Lion, where they will experience firsthand new lower prices and other store enhancements, such as the greatest value in store brands and fresher produce.”
To celebrate the changes at the group of 169 stores in the Carolinas the company offered a bag of groceries to the first 50 customers at each location beginning November 13 through November 16.
The investment program was initially launched in May 2011 and rolled out gradually to different groupings of stores within the company 10 state trading area. The initiative appears to be working despite stiff competition in its core markets from the likes of Walmart, Dollar General, Family Dollar and conventional food retailers. Food Lion has reported four consecutive quarters of same store volume and sales growth, including a 2.2% gain during the period ended September 30.
