Driven by strength in its baby and parenting and tools business units, Newell-Rubbermaid grew second quarter sales 3.5% to $1.47 billion, but profits fell slightly to $109.8 million, or 37 cents a share, compared with $111.8 million, or 38 cents a share, the prior year.
The $575 million acquisition of Maidenform Brands by HanesBrands would create a mass market intimate apparel powerhouse, but not everyone is happy with a sales price that is seen as undervaluing the takeover target.
Leading payments processor Vantiv cited strength in its E-commerce business as a key driver of a second quarter performance that saw revenues increase 11% to $519.4 million and profits on an adjusted basis increase 21.6% to $82.7 million, or 40 cents a share. Vantiv said its E-commerce business grew by 38% during the second quarter.
Unseasonably cold and wet weather and cautious consumer spending negatively impacted business at Dr Pepper Snapple Group, which reported second quarter 2013 net sales of $1.61 billion, a 1% decrease from $1.62 for the same period last year.
