Target has awarded its 2010 Partner Award of Excellence to Munchkin, a designer and manufacturer of clever infant and toddler products. Target presents the award to select companies across various companies. Munchkin took home the top honor in the newborn/infant/toddler category.

Target ranked 49th on a list of the nation’s 100 largest online retailers based on an annual assessment conducted by the research firm ForeSee Results. The firm said that customer satisfaction with e-tailers is at an all time high with an overall median score of 78 on a scale of 100. Target scored a 78 compared with top-ranked at 86 and bottom ranked at 70. The company could make a major move up the ranking by this time next year as a major relaunch of is planned for this fall just as millions of shopper head online for holiday shopping.

Target is among the key sponsors of a Kids in Need Foundation event slated for this fall in Minneapolis. The company, along with fellow Minneapolis-based supplier 3M, is supporting the organization’s annual cocktail reception and fundraising dinner to be held September 21 at The Depot from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The guest speaker at the event is former OfficeMax chairman and CEO Sam Duncan.

According to the report, Target earned its spot by expanding its food selection and repositioning itself as a low-price leader and thereby countering the perception of it being a trendier, albeit pricier store than its competitors.

Projections calling for a low-to-mid single-digit comp increase at Target during May don’t sound overly aggressive, but when factoring in some of the economic headwinds and uncertainties facing the U.S. economy, the sales plan begins to sound more ambitious.

Consumers are dealing with higher fuel prices, food inflation and lingering unemployment. Where $4 a gallon gas prices are headed next is big unknown, but it is only May and historically prices increase during the summer. Ouch!
